Sea Star Wasting Syndrome

While Stowaway Sea Stars are fictional, there is a very real danger to Pacific Sea Stars.

pedro-lastra-124720-unsplashBeginning around 2014 the Pacific or Purple Sea Star (Pisaster Ochraceus), began to suffer a real threat known as ‘sea star wasting syndrome’ (SSWS) which has decimated populations of Sea Stars from California to the Gulf of Alaska. The cause is currently unknown, suspected to be a virus, and the threat is severe.

We hope our efforts at Stowaway might help bring more attention to the plight of actual Sea Stars in the quest to find a meaningful solution.
